5-Cycle Prayer Flags
5-Cycle Prayer Flags
All the flags in this section are 5 cycles of five colors each, or 25 flags. These are the flags that are flown over stupas and temples and span across mountain passes, all aover Neplal. They are made from cheap cotton gauze, and often remain up until the birds make off with the last of the faded threads. If they are not taken down at the New Year, new flags are strung right across the old.
The five colors represent
the five elements and are always represented in a specific order: blue for space, white for water, red for fire, green for wind, and yellow for earth. If other than the general blessings of 'goodwill to all creatures' are desired, they may carry particular blessings of peace, or healing.
