Description
Human Skull decorated with silver, brass, copper, coral and turquoise beads and fittings. This meditation piece is a reminder of the impermanence of life. Limited availability. Formerly they were were relatively easy to export from Nepal, as there weren’t explicit laws prohibiting export. However since Nepal has become a republic, laws have been passed that explicitly forbid export, although sometimes exceptions might be allowed in the case of a practising Buddhist.
These have been recently acquired from a collection. At a guess, this piece is 30-40 years old. It is nicely wrought and the bone has a very nice patina. The top is hinged and opens to reveal the 8 Lucky Symbols and a Vajra. This piece is unusual in that the top (Calvariun) is painted in polychrome.
Current stock were acquired from an estate.
