Richly colored deep red beads, strands are 24″ long the beads vary between 3mm – 4mm. These came out of Asia, and are probably 19th C.
These beads have been traded since the 15th century all over the world. Also know as Cornaline d’ Allepo; meaning “Agate of Allepo”. They are called white hearts, as the core is made from white glass which is then wrapped with the red glass. Until modern times the only way to may red glass was to infuse the glass with gold. To increase the opacity the red glass was wound about the white core.
