Description
We call this one “The Hag”, though it probably depicts the traditional Tibetan Tantric ‘flayed man’. In general, it represents the scapegoat or ritual offering. There is also the tale of Palden Lhamo, one of the Eight Dharmapalas (the wrathful protectors of Buddhism) who was married to the king of Lanka. When she was unable to convert her husband to Buddhism, she vowed to put an end to his dynasty. She killed her son and flayed him, then drank his blood using his skull for a cup and also ate his flesh. We’ve sold a surprising number of this design. Some things you just don’t want to examine too closely.
